You must contact a lawyer immediately if you are being investigated. You may give up some of your fundamental constitutional rights if you speak to the police prior to seeking protections and advice from a lawyer. Sometimes it is the difference between being charged and walking away free.

Appeals in Federal Court must be filed within 14 days of the Judgment. The U.S. District Court will typically, upon request of Defendant, file the notice of appeal on behalf of the Defendant. You must contact a lawyer immediately for avoid missing the deadline.

Appeals in State Court must be filed within 30 days of the Judgment. A final judgment is the entry filed following a conviction by a court or a jury. It is usually filed the day of the decision and you should not delay contacting a lawyer if you believe you have been unfairly convicted. Remember that if you believe that there is something improper or unconstitutional about your case you must never plead “Guilty.” Pleading guilty waives almost all of your appellate arguments. You must demand the right to plead “No Contest” which will preserve all of your appellate rights.
